6-12 Curriculum: How it Works...

Options

Depending on the learning style, current ability level, and other important factors each Wisconsin Virtual Learning student will have access to a wide variety of curriculum, levels of challenge, learning pathway and electives.

The Three primary providers of curriculum will be:

  • We will be offering selected Lincoln Interactive courses for grades 6-8
  • Florida Virtual
  • Aventa
  • In addition, for 2009-10, a new and very powerful learning management system will allow Wisconsin Virtual Learning teachers to customize and create courses, as determined by student need. Several courses are already in the works, as of February, 2009.

Important Details

1. Following February open-enrollment and acceptance of the open-enrollment by the resident school district, students new to the school and, when appropriate, continuing students will take placement tests to determine their level of competency primarily in reading, language arts, and mathematics. In certain cases, the past performance of students, as indicated by their high school transcript will be considered in lieu of placement testing.

2. Parents and educators from Wisconsin Virtual Learning will have a conference during which the results of placement tests, past student achievement data, learning style/personality, interests, career goals, and other relevant factors will be discussed to determine the best possible course placement and preferred learning pathway for each student.

3. Once again, WVL teachers will be able to customize both lower level and advanced curriculum to meet the learning needs of students.

4. Once the school year starts in September, students will interact with teachers in a variety of ways, depending on the curriculum choice for the student and - again - the learning needs. Direct messaging, one-on-one teacher conferences, online classes, private online tutoring sessions, and/or face-to-face teacher meetings may be required for any particular student. Depending on the ability of any student to function as an independent-online learner, regular class meetings may be required.

5. Parents play an active role in the education of WVL students. It is imperative that parents, teachers, and students keep the lines of communication open, utilizing both email and telephone.

6. A variety of parent and student orientation activities will take place over the course of the summer.
