How it Works

1. Following February open-enrollment and acceptance of the open-enrollment by the resident school district, students new to the school and, when appropriate, continuing students will take placement tests to determine their level of competency primarily in reading, language arts, and mathematics.

2. Parents and educators from Wisconsin Virtual Learning will have a conference during which the results of placement tests, past student achievement data, learning style/personality, interests, goals, and other relevant factors will be discussed to determine the best possible course placement and preferred learning pathway for each student.

3. New for 2010-2011: In addition to choosing the most appropriate curriculum level, during the aforementioned parent/teacher conference, a curriculum choice will also need to be made. While some students will continue with the K12 Curriculum, others will switch to either Calvert Academic, Calvert Scholastic or Verticy Learning. It is most important that we are able to best meet the learning needs of every student.

4. Once the school year starts in September, students will interact with teachers in a variety of ways, depending on the curriculum choice for the student and - again - the learning needs of each child. One-on-one teacher conferences, online classes, private online tutoring sessions, and/or face-to-face teacher meetings may be required for any particular student.

5. Parents play an active role in the education of WVL students, particularly for students in grades K-5. It is imperative that parents and teachers keep the lines of communication open, utilizing both email and telephone.

6. For each course, K-5 WVL students will receive a list of Essential Understandings, which is the most important (essential) learning goals for which all students are responsible for mastering.

7. Mastery: students may advance in their courses and onto new courses at any time, even during the middle of the school year. In order to do this, they must demonstrate to their teacher/s that they have truly learned/mastered the Essential Understandings for the course in question.

8. A variety of parent and student orientation activities will take place over the course of the summer, related to understanding how the school functions and also for technology.
